Death of Walter Rader OBE

It is with great sadness that the Fundraising Regulator shares the news that our former board member for Northern Ireland, Walter Rader OBE, has died.

Walter died peacefully on 13 January 2023 at the Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast. Our deep condolences are with his wife, all his family and friends at this time.

Walter had over 40 years’ experience across a range of public, voluntary and community sector organisations, including as Director of the Big Lottery Fund in Northern Ireland and Deputy Chief Charity Commissioner of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland. Walter was awarded an OBE for Services to the Community in Northern Ireland in 2010 and commissioned Deputy Lieutenant for Belfast in May 2019. He served as our board member for Northern Ireland and as a member of our Complaints and Investigations Committee from 1 January 2018 to 2 March 2022.

Lord Toby Harris, Chair of the Fundraising Regulator’s Board said:

“As the Fundraising Regulator’s first board member for Northern Ireland, Walter’s extensive experience in the charitable and public sectors was of huge value and he was incredibly generous with his time and energy. He was liked and admired by all who knew and worked with him. Our board, committee members and staff team are thankful for his kindness, wisdom and insight. He will be sorely missed, and we send our condolences to his family and friends.”
