Mr U complained to a charity because he thought they were making exaggerated statements in one of their campaigns. He wasn’t satisfied with their response.
We found no evidence that the charity set out to mislead potential donors. However, we did find that the charity should have taken greater care when interpreting the data. This could have helped prevent any potential misunderstanding.
We recommended that the charity consider the learning from this complaint and the importance of accurately fact checking and interpreting data when it is to be used in fundraising communications.
We also recommended that the charity consider citing its supporting evidence on line. This will allow donors to make an informed decision when they donate.
The charity accepted our findings and recommendations.
